A Quick Fact:

Minerals and suntan lotions or oils tend to build up along the area of the water level. This not only appears dirty, but it can encourage the growth of algae and bacteria. In order to properly clean this area, and the other tile areas of your swimming pool or spa, you need a special tile brush and tile soap. The tile brush can fit onto your telepole, so that you can avoid stooping and bending while scrubbing your swimming pool/spa tile. The tile brush is approximately 3 x 5 inches and contains a somewhat abrasive foam pad. This pad allows for efficient scrubbing. The tile brush itself is mounted on a plain L-shaped, two-part aluminum tube.

A swimming pool supply store will stock the special tile soap you need to clean your pool or spa. The soap should be mixed as follows: One part of muriatic acid to five parts of soap. When used with your tile brush, this mixture will cut through the persistent stains and oils that build up on the tile in your pool. However, this mixture has the capacity to eat right through the plastic on the tile brush pads and brush handle. Therefore, to prevent this from occurring, you must keep rinsing the brush in the pool water after each application and scrubbing. A word of caution: Do not use other types of soap (besides the tile formula) because they could suds up and enter the filtration system and cause problems.
