Automatic Pool Cleaners

Automatic pool cleaners basically include three different types: Electric robot, Booster type and Boosterless. Today you should have a fairly easy time finding an efficient pool cleaner that meets your needs. The technology of pool cleaners is improving all the time, making them more efficient and easier to use.

The booster type pool cleaner works in much the same way as does a leaf vacuum. A pressurized stream of water is sent up into a bag thereby creating a vacuum for the device as it skims the bottom of the pool. The pressure is being created by taking the return water and advancing (or boosting) the pressure with a separate pump and motor.

The boosterless pool cleaner has a variation in the water pressure design of the unit. It utilizes the circulation pump as the booster. In this way it connects to the return line after the pump, however, before the filter. This type of pool cleaner is called boosterless since it does not use a separate water pressure boosting mechanism.

An automated valve and control system are required on these machines to prevent the heater from operating while the cleaning unit is operating which is a disadvantage of this system. If both the cleaner and heater were to be on at the same time, the cleaner would receive the return water before the heater did. This could cause the heater to shut off or overheat because of the low water circulation in the heater.

These boosterless cleaners are not very practical since you are not able to filter the water and heat it as you vacuum the dirt and debris. Another disadvantage is that the units require extra plumbing and controls which can be quite expensive.

The Electric robot type of pool cleaner is generally used on large commercial pools, rather than private pools because they are quite expensive. The electric robot is like a battery powered vacuum cleaner with a bag. It traps the dirt and debris as the unit travels along the bottom of the pool.
