Backwashing a Hayward D.E. filter

Some people may view the necessary maintenance of backwashing the D.E. (Diatomaceous Earth) filter as a rather involved chore. However, D.E. filters are able to get your pool water cleaner than other filters. Once you have undertaken the procedure of backwashing your D.E. filter several times, it will not seem like such a time consuming task. You may need to read the steps for backwashing each time your undertake the task in order to refresh your memory, but the more you conduct the procedure, the more routine it will become. It is worth it to have clean sparkling water in your pool or spa. After all, the D.E. filter can filter out dirt as tiny as three to five microns. The diatomaceous earth is composed of billions of fossilized plankton skeletons that can actually capture and maintain the dirt.

In order to backwash the Hayward D.E. filter, write down or print out the following steps so that you may refer to them each time you conduct this procedure: Turn the pump off; open the backwash valve; bump the handle slowly about 15 times; turn the pump on and run it for two minutes; then turn the pump off; bump the handle slowly 15 times; turn the pump on for one minute; turn the pump off; close the backwash valve tightly; turn the pump on; add diatomaceous earth (D.E.) to the skimmer located closest to the pump; For the Hayward EC-40/EC-50 filters, use three one pound coffee cans of D.E.; for the Hayward EC-65/EC-75 filters, use five one pound coffee cans of D.E.; add D.E. to skimmers VERY SLOWLY. DO NOT CLOG THEM!; check pool water level after backwashing, then add more water if necessary.
