Cartridge Filters

Cartridge filtering is a simple process wherein water passes through a cartridge filter while dirt is kept out at the exterior of the device. The filters need to be kept clean so that the cartridge is better able to catch the large particles, and the smaller particles can be filtered through.

Pressure washing is the best way to clean the cartridge. The element is removed from the filter and then washed by the garden hose.

It has only been in the past several years that cartridge filtration has become accepted by spa and pool owners, even though the process has been around for quite a long time. Cartridge filtration is a simple method with easy maintenance which has increased its growth and acceptance among pool and spa owners and caretakers.

It is quite easy to determine when your cartridge elements need cleaning, even though there are no electrical parts to stop working. You will know the element needs cleaning when the spaces and pores of the material surface plug up due to continued use.

The causes of plugging up a filter in a spa are generally the result of body oils and perspiration, soaps, chemical and other such particles. In a swimming pool the clogs are usually a result of suntan lotions and outside debris, such as dirt, leaves and algae.

Even though you properly clean and maintain your swimming pool or spa filter, you can establish that the cartridge needs to be replaced after determining the following conditions: low water flow rate and degree of pressure; a tear in the material or center core; brief time between cleanings. All of these conditions depend on correct water chemistry of your pool or spa and utilizing a proper maintenance schedule.

The filter elements are somewhat fragile in that they are plastic and require proper maintenance and treatment. You may enhance the life of your cartridge in the following ways: reading the instructions to learn how to properly clean the elements; do not use a steel brush to clean the system; use an enzyme treatment (this will break down oils); do not let the differential pressure exceed 8psi between cleanings; properly balance and maintain the chemistry of the pool or spa; alternate between two sets of cartridges when cleaning.
