Cleaning the
cartridge filters
The cartridge filters are the simplest
to clean.
You will need to remove the cartridge to clean it. First, turn off
the pump, then remove the retaining band; lift the filter tank from
the base and remove the cartridge.
If there is a light coating of dirt and debris, you can merely hose
it off, then inspect the inside pleats of the cartridge. The pleats
are a convenient place for dirt and oil to accumulate. Do not acid
wash a cartridge because acid will cause the material to become hard
on the webbing of the fabric. This would cause the fabric to be
resistant to washing. Instead, soak the cartridge in a trash can
full of water and trisodium phosphate (TSP) (one cup of TSP per five
gallons of water); and muriatic acid (one cup per five gallons of
water) for one hour. Take out the cartridge and insert it in fresh
water, then scrub it until it's clean. (Do not use soap with the
water.)
Lastly, put the filter back together and continue with regular
circulation.
Note that you will need to replace your cartridge with a new one if
your cartridge will not become clean. You will be able to tell this
if the fabric webbing is shiny and closed, or if it has become worn
or torn.
