How to properly clean your spa!

The steps for cleaning and maintaining your spa are basically the same as those for cleaning and maintaining your swimming pool. Although you may confront some different types of conditions in your spa that you need to clean or maintain.

Clean the filter itself before you clean the spa. You may clean the filter by running fresh water from the garden hose through the circulation system. This action will clean out and rid the lines of any dirty water. If you do not take this step first, you risk having your clean spa water fill up with dirty water when you turn the circulation back on.

Next you need to decide if you need to drain your spa before attempting to clean it. If the water appears extremely dirty, cloudy, or the spa contains rocks or gravel amongst hard to reach places you will probably need to drain the water in the spa. However, if you cannot determine for certain if the spa needs draining, you may determine if it is necessary to drain it or not by testing the chemistry of the water.

Chemical testing and treatment should be done with great care. Keep in mind that spas contain a lot less water than swimming pools so you need to be more precise with your chemical applications. Since a swimming pool has a much greater water content than a spa, it is easier for the pool's water to absorb a chemical error. With a spa, you should add the chemicals very slowly and add fewer chemical than you think necessary. You can always add more, but you cannot easily take away excess chemicals.

If it is necessary to drain a spa, turn off the equipment at the breaker so that the time clock does not turn on before it should. While the spa is draining, it is best to set up the submersible pump, then go on to something else while the water is draining. The submersible pump will not burn out if it keeps running because it contains a small hole in the bottom which recirculates even a small amount of water.

When vacuuming out your spa, be very careful if your spa is made of fiberglass. If you vacuum too carelessly, you may scratch the bottom and sides of the spa.
