DE getting into
pool: What to look for
There are numerous ways in which dirt or DE may get through the
filter and back into the pool.
Some of the more common problems of dirt or DE getting back into the
pool are: the filter itself may be dirty and cause dirt and debris
to get into the pool; the manifold may have chips or cracks; DE and
dirt may escape into the pool through openings in the manifold; or
the grids, laterals or cartridges may be damaged.
Another reason for dirt getting back into the pool is that the jets
may be clogged. You may be alerted to this problem if water is not
flowing through the jets properly. This could be due to sand or
other particles in other sections of the unit that are clogging the
jets. The unit may need to be taken apart and cleaned in this
instance.
Also, when you have a new pool, the sand filter may clog with
plaster dust, which can block the sand bed and inhibit the filter
cycle and cause the plaster dust to get into the pool.
When a backwash valve is difficult to turn, you need to perform the
teardown process and lubricate the components before leaks happen.
Inspect the grids, cartridges, laterals and manifolds thoroughly
when you break down a filter for cleaning.
The greatest cause of leaks, wherein dirt or DE can get back into
the pool, is due to improperly reassembling the filter components
after cleaning. Therefore, make sure you follow instructions
carefully and are very thorough in reassembling your unit after
backwashing and cleaning. Remember you will save yourself much time
and prevent much frustration if you do so.
