Diatomaceous Earth Filters

Diatomaceous earth (D.E.) is the consistency of a porous powder. It contains microscopic openings. The openings look like tiny sponges when magnified. These types of filters enable clear water to pass through the openings, while small particles from the water are held and entrapped in the material.

The filters have internal fixtures that become coated with D.E., and create a cake-like appearance, and they are then able to strain the dirt, dust particles and algae, and even certain bacteria from the water. This process makes your water, not only cleaner, but healthier as well.

The cleaning process of a D.E. filter is similar to that of a sand filter. In order to clean a D.E. filter, utilize a backwashing technique or regenerate and drain the clogged D.E. In order to restore the filtration system, a new D.E. "charge" is added to the filter.

Some of the advantages of D.E. filtration are: Provides a larger filtered area; allows more time between cleanings; has a lower (energy efficient) pumping capability which results in lower utility costs.

Since D. E. filters are relatively easy to maintain, many people favor this type of filtration. This filtration is also preferred by many people because the D.E. filters are capable of removing particles as tiny as one to three microns. It has the ability to remove smaller particles than that of the cartridge or sand filters. By removing such microscopic particles, it makes the clarity of the water much healthier, and the water not only looks cleaner, it even sparkles.
