Finding out how many gallons your pool holds!

It is important for many reasons to known how many gallons of water your pool contains. First of all, you need to know the amount of water in order to determine the proper amount of chemicals to use in your pool. Not only are the chemicals important for the health and safety of your pool water, but to be cost effective as well. You do not want to spend more on chemical treatments than what is necessary in order to properly maintain your swimming pool or spa.

If you are not aware of how much water your pool contains, you cannot accurately test the water or correct any possible problems.

The following is a sample of an uncomplicated technique for measuring the number of gallons of water in your pool.

Find out the average depth. One way to do this is to tie a string that has been marked off in feet to a type of weight, then measure the deep end of the pool, then measure the shallow end. Add up those numbers then divide by two to obtain the average depth. Then take the average depth number to determine your pool's capacity for gallons of water. The following calculations are set forth in order to determine measurements for rectangular, round and oval shaped pools.

If your pool is a round shape: Take the diameter x diameter x average depth x 5.9 to equal the total gallons. For example: an 18 foot round pool with an average depth of 5 feet contains 9,558 gallons of water.

If your pool is oval shape: Take the long diameter x short diameter x average depth x 5.9 to equal the total gallons. For example if the long diameter is 30 feet, the short diameter is 15 feet and the average depth is 6 feet, the pool contains 15,930 gallons of water.

If your pool is rectangular shape: Take the length x width x average depth x 7.5 to obtain the total gallons. For example: A pool that is 30 feet in length, 15 feet wide and has an average depth of 6 feet will hold 20,250 gallons of water.
