Use a vacuum head and hose to get the dirt out of your pool!

Swimming pool/spa vacuums are used to suck the dirt and debris out of the bottom of the pool. You may vacuum the bottom of a pool or spa by sucking the dirt then sending it to the filter; or by using water pressure from a garden hose to force the dirt and debris (including leaves) into a bag that is subsequently removed and cleaned). This vacuum is called a leaf vacuum.

The height of the vacuum wheels are adjustable. This enables you to adjust the vacuum head for the condition of your pool so that it will have the best clearance for your particular pool. The dirt can be better removed from the pool if the head is close to the surface. Although, the suction should not be too much because it can suck the vacuum head to the surface and you will not be able to get it back down to the bottom to vacuum. If this does occur, adjust the head height upward.

The wheels of the vacuum heads are generally made of plastic; however, some of the better models are made of high-tech composite resins. The bearing systems may be quite simple with merely a hole in the wheel in which the axle may be inserted. Or it may have wheels with ball bearings to dispense the contents and allow the vacuum to glide smoothly.

Vacuum heads are made to be flexible so that the head curves with the bending of the pool in the corners and at the bottom. The heads are created from a plastic which is flexible. The wheels are also made of plastic and are made to keep the head slightly above the surface of the pool.

Some of the higher priced pool/spa vacuums used commercially have heads that are constructed of stainless steel and are several feet wide. There are also plastic helmet style vacuums that do not contain wheels, but instead have a rim of bristles. These types of vacuum heads are used on vinyl pools and fiberglass spas. They also may be used on new plaster before it has been "broken in." Standard wheels cannot be used with these types of vacuums because they can tear or mar the surface of the pool or spa.

The head and hose of the vacuums are created to work with the circulation equipment of the pool or spa. The bottom of the skimmer opening holds the hose at one end and the hose attaches to the vacuum head at the other end. The vacuum head also connects to the telepole. The person glides the vacuum head over the bottom surface of the pool as the pump is running. In this way, the dirt and debris are vacuumed directly into the filter.

The vacuum hoses are available in different lengths from 10 to 50 feet. The hose cuff, which is 1-1/4 to 1-1/2 inches in diameter, is designed to fit the dimensions of the vacuum head. The connector is an important aspect of the fitting of the hose. It has female threading on both ends so that two hose lengths may be joined. This feature is useful on a large or very deep pool. The female threaded cuffs attach to the hose in order that you may screw replacement cuffs onto a hose. Make sure the cuffs swivel on the end of the hose because there is less chance that the hose will kink or coil up.
